Alkoholfri fettleversjukdom
Tidigare ansågs viral hepatit och överdrivet alkoholintag vara de största hoten mot levern. 2
Idag har ökningen av diabetes och fetma resulterat i en epidemi av icke-alkoholisk fettleversjukdom (NAFLD) , 9 som kännetecknas av ackumulering av fettföreningar i levern i frånvaro av kronisk alkoholanvändning.
Det kan utvecklas med tiden och orsaka leverfibros (vävnadsärrbildning) som kan leda till levercancer, cirros och/eller leversvikt. 10-13
Extrakt av örten mjölktistel , innehållande föreningen silymarin , har länge använts för att skydda leverfunktionen hos patienter med leversjukdom.
Flera kliniska prövningar fann att mjölktistel, ensam eller i kombination med vitamin E, och fosfatidylkolin minskar leverfett, fibros och enzymnivåer hos patienter med NAFLD. 14-17
En metaanalys av åtta randomiserade, kontrollerade studier fann att mjölktistel kan hjälpa till att förbättra NAFLD . 17
Mjölktistel har visat sig förbättra blodmarkörer för leverskador och kan också hjälpa till att minska fasteglukos och LDL -kolesterolhöjningar som ofta åtföljer NAFLD. 17,18

Levertoxiner

Cirros
